30 Neo-Futurist Plays
at the 2022 Vancouver Fringe
This show is based on Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind created by Greg Allen and the Neo-Futurists. The show premiered in Chicago in 1988 and went on to be the longest-running show in the city (1988-2016). The show gained notoriety and was performed by Neo-Futurist branches in New York, San Francisco, and London. Various volumes of the published plays have been released over the years, leading to productions being done all over the world, and to our production! Our unique production of the show features 30 hand-picked plays from Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind (30 Plays in 60 Minutes) by Greg Allen. In keeping with our mandate, we created a unique directing structure where five directors worked together to create a single artistic vision. This provided opportunities for new directors and allowed for a collaborative space that includes a range of perspectives in the work and the rehearsal space. This produced a space for learning from each other, developing artistically, and creating a new non-hierarchical directorial structure. Our directors personally selected the 30 plays used in our production, based on which they felt drawn to direct and that suited the ensemble they had cast. Each director directed six plays individually, which gave actors the opportunity to work with five unique directorial styles. then collaborated on bringing all the parts together to create the final product we are presenting at the Vancouver Fringe 2022.
